From September 21–24, one of the most prestigious conferences in orthopedic surgery, the Orthopaedic Summit 2022, took place in Boston, Massachusetts. Getting a paper accepted for this conference is quite a challenge. This year, only 10% of all submitted papers were accepted. One of our team members, Dr. Gonzalo Mariscal, presented groundbreaking research in the field of spinal surgery, specifically regarding scoliosis.
The work titled «Abolition of T7-T10 sagittal dynamics during forced ventilation in AIS Lenke 1A patients compared to healthy subjects. An underlying factor of respiratory limitation in AIS.» This is the first study to provide an answer to an important question in scoliosis patients. We have demonstrated that the stiffness of the T7-T10 vertebral segment could explain the ventilatory limitations found in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients. This is a multicenter study involving various prestigious Spanish institutions and surgeons with relevant contributions to spine surgery, including Jesús Burgos, Luis Antón-Rodrigálvarez, Eduardo Hevia, and Carlos Barrios.
The clinical implications of this study are notable, as the complete restriction of the T7-T10 vertebral segment following instrumented fusion of thoracic scoliotic curves could explain the lack of improvement in respiratory function after surgery in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
«The congress has been one of the most comprehensive and highest level ones I have been able to attend. I have been able to attend lectures by brilliant people and prestigious surgeons. It has been a congress where we have been able to establish new relationships and extract ideas to answer questions that are not yet answered and to improve existing studies and technologies.
