What you will achieve with this course
This course is designed so that, upon completion, you will have learned the skills and knowledge necessary to:
Meet the course creator
Dr. Gonzalo Mariscal Ruiz-Rico
Doctor of Medicine
I have reached some milestones that reflect my commitment to scientific research:
- Receive the Young European Investigator Award.
- To be recognized as the second most productive author in orthopedic surgery in Spain during the period 2023–2024.
- Present more than 100 scientific papers at national and international congresses.
- To be invited by scientific societies to give presentations on research and meta-analysis.
Why do I teach this?
When I was studying medicine, I didn't want to limit myself to memorizing notes. I wanted understand, investigate, and contribute something new. A teacher encouraged me to take my first steps on my own and that was when I discovered the meta-analysisa methodology that allowed me to develop research with real impact, even without having large resources.
That discovery changed the course of my career. Since then, I have guided other professionals in developing their ideas, publishing their work in scientific journals, and accessing new academic and professional opportunities. Now I want to pass all that learning on to you so that you can too turn an idea into solid, publishable research.
A proven method, structured in 5 weeks

- Formation of collaborative working groups around related thematic areas. This will allow the coordinated development of several articles on the same field.
- Determination of the scope and design of the meta-analysis based on your research question. Options such as meta-analysis of clinical trials, observational studies, cohort studies, etc., will be analyzed.
- Preparation of a preliminary protocol describing the objectives, methods, and proposed analysis plan.
- Initial literature search.
- Individual consulting to optimize your conceptual design.
WEEK 2
Master the selection and screening of studies
Master the selection and screening of studies
- Practical sessions on advanced search strategies in biomedical databases such as PubMed.
- Application of Boolean operators, controlled keywords, filtering by date, language, document type, etc.
- Replicate the searches to evaluate their reproducibility.
- Establishment of clear eligibility criteria based on PICOS (population, intervention, comparison, outcomes, study design).
- Learning techniques to expedite the exclusion of irrelevant studies, such as rapid title and abstract screening.
- Practical session applying the knowledge.
WEEK 3
Extract data and combine results efficiently
Extract data and combine results efficiently
- Identify and prioritize the key variables to extract from each study.
- Training in fast focused reading techniques.

- Learn strategies to group and synthesize results from multiple studies, such as relative risks, mean differences, etc.
- Master Review Manager software to conduct statistical data analysis.
- Learn methods for heterogeneity assessment and subgroup analysis.
- Receive individual feedback on the quality of extracted data.
WEEK 4
Write an impeccable article
Write an impeccable article
- Receive advice on how to draft an engaging introduction that accurately contextualizes the research question.
- Learn to skillfully craft the methodology section following a flexible yet comprehensive format.
